Nivar crossed Marakanam near Pondicherry coast as a very severe cyclonic storm between 11.30 pm and 2.30 am on Nov 26. Puducherry has received 225 mm rain from morning 8.30 am to 01.30 am(Nov 26)
Eye of storm is expected to cross at Marakanam, 34 km north of Pondy, according to Puducherry Control Room.
There are 1000 people now in cyclone relief centres in #Pondicherry . Puducherry has opened 206 relief shelters for Nivar.

IMPORTANT: Pondicherry has imposed Section 144 in view of Cyclone Nivar. Movement in public places is prohibited from 9 pm on November 24 to 6 am on November 26 (subject to revision based on conditions of cyclone crossing). All shops and establishments to be closed. Exceptions: Petrol pumps, pharmacies, milk booths, health services, govt officials/ agencies on cyclone duty and law and order.

The Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) projects landfall in Puducherry at around 9:30 pm on Wednesday, while the European model ECMWF puts landfall around Mamallapuram and Kalpakkam at 2:30 am on Thursday.#CycloneNivar #CycloneNivarUpdate

Storm warning 10 at Puducherry Port signalling severe cyclone to cross over or near port area.
200 relief centres set up in Pondicherry including 70 in urban areas for safety of those in low-lying areas. Food packets will be arranged here for those affected by the cyclones.
If any area is flooded, water will be pumped out by rescue personnel. Those in urban areas prone to flooding like Krishna Nagar etc should prepare to move to upper floor/ higher ground in case of flooding.
3 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are positioned in Puducherry at areas likely to be affected equipped with reliable wireless & satellite communications, tree/ pole cutters for rescue operations and post landfall restoration.They are currently spreading awareness among local communities@NDRFHQ
Health teams will attend to any injuries, covid and vector borne diseases.
Indian Coast Guard has deployed 8 ships and 2 aircraft at sea for warning merchant ships and fishing boats on inclement weather. 23 ICG Disaster Response teams ready.
All government departments will work round-the-clock; control rooms, rescue teams kept ready.
In case of power interruption, it will be restored within 12 hours
Holiday to be compensated on December 12
Holiday declared for educational institutes and government offices on November 25; to compensate they will work on December 12 (Saturday). Not applicable to government officials on cyclone duty, disaster management etc
