The theme of this World Environment Day- celebrated on June 5 every year- is year Beat Plastic Pollution. In the last 10 years alone, the world has produced more plastic than the entire last century.
The focus of the UN Environment’s campaign is on reducing single-use and disposable plastic, which accounts for 50 per cent of plastic we use including plastic bags, containers, forks and spoons, cups, straws and sanitary pads.
This week, PondyLive plans to highlight individuals , non-profits and businesses who are beating plastic pollution in their own ways, big and small. Don’t forget to share your story with us below in the comment section or on facebook or instagram with #PlasticFreePondy
Outdoor Being is an alternate tourism initiative in Pondicherry. We unanimously decided to promote the habit of carrying steel water bottles instead of plastic ones during all our trips. This helps to motivate tourists to refill their water bottles whenever they run out of water rather than buy packaged drinking water.
Plastic water bottles are easily one of the most commonly used plastic products by anyone. In a tourist place like Pondicherry, used plastic water bottles can be seen everywhere from beaches to shopping areas.
Steel water bottles can be used over and over again for years and ensure reusability and better hygiene. They are known for their versatility and durability and can help to store both cold and hot water.
If tourists and locals could adopt this simple and small step, it could potentially lead to a big change and great reduction of plastics in Pondicherry.
