The Auroville Birthday bonfire is a much anticipated annual event in this region. But this year the Auroville bonfire and sunrise meditation on Sunday are not open to the public due to the ongoing pandemic. The event will be live-streamed instead.
Auroville was inaugurated on February 28, 1968 and every birthday celebration is marked by a sunrise meditation and bonfire. The event sees a few thousands gather in silence around the bonfire at the Amphitheatre as the sun rises over the Matrimandir.
This year also marks 50 years since the inauguration of Matrimandir on Feb. 21 , 1971. The amphitheatre and the Matrimandir are also out of bounds to public on February 28 this year.

“It is regretted that unlike previous years no one will be admitted this year” , said a release by Auroville Outreach Media.
A note from the Matrimandir team said only Aurovilians, Newcomers and Aurocard Holders, including registered volunteers, will be allowed to attend the meditation. Aurovilians and new comers will have have to bring their Auroville ID cards or Aadhar cards. Guests staying with them will have to collect passes from Matrimandir Access office.
