On Thursday, Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan was sworn in as Puducherry Lieutenant Governor.
She already holds the post of Governor of Telangana. On Thursday, Dr Tamilisai took additional charge as the Lt. Governor of Puducherry at the Raj Nivas here. Chief Justice of Madras High Court Sanjib Banerjee administered the oath.
- Her first actions as Lt Governor were to approve pending grants for SC/ST beneficiaries & funds for the AIDS Control Society.
- She has ordered a floor test for the ruling government to prove their majority in the Legislative Assembly on Monday, February 22 by 5 pm . The Congress government does not have a clear majority following resignations by 4 MLAs .
5th Woman Governor of Puducherry
A doctor by profession, Tamilisai Soundararajan has been active in politics since the 90s. She served as the Tamil Nadu President of the BJP for five years but lost the Assembly elections and two Lok Sabha elections she contested in 2009 and 2019 (against now MP Kanimozhi ) .
Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan succeeds Kiran Bedi who was removed from office on Tuesday night in a surprise order.
The former gynaecologist is the 5th woman to hold the post of Lt Governor Puducherry. The others were Chandrawati ( Feb-Dec 1990 ), Rajendra Kumari Bajpai (1995-98) and Rajani Rai (1998- 2002).
