Heavy rains and strong winds are in store as Cyclone Mandous approaches Pondicherry and North Tamil Nadu coast. It is expected to cross the coast between Pondicherry and Sriharikota around Mahabalipuram in the late hours of Friday night to early hours of Saturday as per the latest IMD forecast.
While ‘Mandous ‘ intensified into a Severe Cyclonic Storm on Thursday evening it is expected to weaken into a cyclonic storm before it crosses the coast. As of 6.30 am it was 240 km east-south-east of Karaikal

Holiday for schools and colleges
A red alert (indicating heavy rainfall and a possibility of extremely heavy rainfall over 200 mm ) has been issued for Puducherry and a few other Northern Tamil Nadu districts. The Puducherry government has declared 2 days holiday for all schools and colleges on December 9 and 10.
Preparedness and response measures
Two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are stationed in Puducherry for rescue operations and 163 relief centres have been set up for those who live in huts and in areas along the seashore.
District Collector E.Vallavan has passed orders under Section 144 of CPC to remove unauthorised banners, hoardings, flex boards, advertisements poles on the roadside as these could endanger public safety during the cyclonic storm. Organisations/ individuals/politiical parties cannot erect any such banners or cut outs on the roadside without prior permission and would be penalised /liable for criminal action .
Directorate of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Puducherry issued an advisory on December 6 asking fishermen not to venture into the sea till further orders. Boats and fishing equipment have been secured.
The PWD is equipped with water pumps for pumping out water in case of flooding in low-lying areas and the administration has set up 24*7 control rooms for emergency response.
