Orange Alert : Very heavy rainfall forecast for Puducherry on November 11- 13

An orange alert indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall has been issued for Puducherry for November 11 and 12 extending to the morning of November 13, after a low pressure area formed over southwest Bay of Bengal on Wednesday (November 9).

In the next 48 hours , the low pressure area would become more marked and move north-west towards Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts, according to a press release issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Scattered heavy rainfall and isolated very heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning are forecast for Pondicherry on Nov  11 and 12. There may be heavy rainfall on November 10 and 13

Winds reaching a speed of  45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph are likely to blow along and off the coast on November 11 and 12 . Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.

What is an orange alert ?

An orange alert for Puducherry indicates chances of very heavy rainfall (rainfall over 12 cm). Waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic congestion and damage to old buildings that are not maintained,  are possible effects.

In the last one week, Puducherry has recorded around 8 cm rainfall. For the period between October 1- November 9, it has recorded 35 cm.
