Here is your chance to get vaccinated for free without visiting a hospital this week at special Covid vaccine centres in Puducherry. Puducherry is hosting a major vaccination drive at 100 + centres from April 11- 14 as part of the nationwide ‘Vaccine Utsav’. Schools have been identified in every neighbourhood to make it easy for people to get their first dose of Covid-19 vaccine.

Who can get vaccinated ? Anyone who is 45 years of age or above is eligible for vaccination.

What’s the cost ? Vaccines at these special centres and at government hospitals/ health centres are free .

How many have been vaccinated in Pondy ? As of April 10, Health Ministry data shows 93,096 doses have been given in Pondicherry of which 83,958 are first doses. This is around 6 % of Pondicherry’s total population.

What documents should I carry ? You will be asked to provide your phone number and any one of these identity proofs: Aadhaar, Voter ID (EPIC),  Passport, Driving License, Pan Card, NPR Smart Card,  Pension document with photo.

Why should I get vaccinated?  Covid-19 cases are spiking again all over India, including Pondicherry since March 2021. Apart from wearing masks and following social distancing, getting vaccinated helps in protecting yourself and anyone you may come into contact with including family, colleagues, senior citizens and people with serious health issues. While vaccines cannot completely prevent you from getting Covid-19, they reduce the chances of infection, severity of infection and death .

How does the vaccine work?  Covid-19 vaccine in India (Covishield and Covaxin) is currently given in two doses; second dose can be taken 4 -8 weeks after first dose. It takes atleast two weeks after second dose for your body to develop adequate antibodies.

According to a report in The Hindu, each centre has been given a target of vaccinating 500 people per day.

1. Special vaccination camps from April 9- 17 for various groups: hotel and hospitality industry, bank and LIC employees, Ponlait milk suppliers, auto drivers etc. Their families also are being asked to register in these vaccination camps ordered by Lt. Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan.
