If people choose to step out to Beach Road they have been asked to follow Covid protocols strictly during New Year Pondicherry festivities. Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy has said New Year will be celebrated in Pondicherry keeping in line with guidelines of social distancing and wearing masks. Lt Governor Kiran Bedi, this afternoon appealed to people of neighbouring states not to flock to Puducherry and create a super spreader event. She also citied a health ministry advisory to states which recommends states stay vigilant towards potential ‘super spreader’ events on New Year’s Eve and this winter season.
In recent days, the Chief Minister and Lt Governor have issued contradictory orders on New Year celebrations in Pondicherry that has led to confusion among hotels, local businesses and tourists.

Hi and thank you. This article does not mention if there will be fireworks at midnight. Do you know about this? Also, I dont live in White Town but across the boulevard in Kurichikuppam. Do you know if I can get a pass? Otherwise if I go late i might not be able to enter the street area. ??? I would be one woman alone, tourist type. Appreciate it!

There are bound to be fireworks from what we know ; but nothing extra is planned this year. Passes are for those who have their vehicles inside the barricaded White town areas and want to move their vehicle out for emergencies, visiting temples/ churches on New Year’s Eve etc. They are not passes to access beach road as such. Beach Road is off limits for all vehicles.

Not a great idea to celebrate with large crowd unless people maintain some discipline wearing masks and social distancing .. otherwise this could trigger the worse -mass spread of virus .
